What I learned is:

Abolitionsits Efforts
• -Took root in 1830’s
• -Immediate freeing of slaves
• -Reasons wrong, trangresses religious teachings, results in inhuman treatment of slaves and family violates democracy.
• -Leading Figures: Frederick Douglas, William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Tubman,
• Limited Support even in North: seen as fanatics, business reasons not want hurt trade with south, fear former slaves would move and complete jobs.
South and Slavery
• Extent of Slavery: 80% of whites no slaves
• 19% small farmer’s small number of slaves
• 1% large planters owned 50+
• Treatment: Depended on individual’s farmers city liver. Some terrible treatment but most slaves were provided food, shelter, and clothing.
• Valuable: 1000$ to 1800$ per field hand.
• Pro Slavery Argument: Not necessary evil but a positive good. Argued:
• Historical basis of slavery
• Sanctioned by Bible
• Economics: cotton growth and prosperity
• Better treatment and security some N factory workers
• Saw slaves as inferior… not take care

By 1860 the estimate is to up to 300000 pioneers had settled in Oregon territory
